Retno Hapsari General Manager was born on Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. She is a graduate of Gadjah Mada University in Jogjakarta.
In 2007, Retno took over the operation of a small non profit (Yayasan) called XSProject in Jakarta.
Up until that time it had been operated as an artist’s experimental studio using waste collected by trash pickers as the artistic medium.
Under her guidance, XSProject began focusing not only on the trash pickers but the welfare of their families and the education of their children.
Today, much of her time is spent at the community of trash pickers caring for the needs of both the children and adults. She also manages the workshop where XSProject makes and sells products, much of which is made from the very trash that the pickers depend on to make a living. She frequently speaks to and participates in workshops that focus on finding better ways of recycling and educating Indonesia’s consumers about the social impact that waste has on the environment.

Based in Jakarta, Indonesia, XSProject is a non-profit organization (Yayasan) that works to improve the lives of families living in Jakarta's trash picker communities.

XSProject Operations – What began as an experimental art initiative in 2002, is now an Indonesian not for profit foundation under the name Yayasan XSProject Reguna Kreasi.

XSProject has redirected and used more than 50 tons of trash that were destined for the garbage dump, produced and sold over 100,000 products, engaged  600+ people in the collection of trash and the production of our goods and provided a K-12 education for  more than 100 trash picker children.
XSProject conducts workshops on creative waste reuse and how to transform what was once waste into new consumer items. This is the process of “upcycling”.

We conduct sewing and vocational training in collaboration with other Indonesian foundations. By collaborating with these enterprises we’re able to magnify our social and environmental impact.  XSProject recycles/upcycles consumer and corporate waste such as plastic pouches bought from trash pickers, used billboards, car seat upholstery, advertising banners and flags. Other items are donated by schools. Traditional Indonesian batik fabric is incorporated into our products to demonstrate how simple waste can become a new, unique products. All of XSProject’s products are made in Indonesia.

Program/ Generate Income & Hope From Non-Recyclable Garbage

This project has stopped 10 tons of non-recyclable plastic waste from reaching Jakarta’s garbage dumps by partnering with trash pickers who collect and sell it to XSProject . This gives trash pickers extra income. Post consumer trash is then “upcycled” into new products and sold. It will pay salaries for XSProject’s washers and sewers who make the products we sell. It will provide clean drinking water, health checkups, medical attention, vocational training and micro-finance opportunities.
